Miscellaneous weapons
The mace has been known in Egypt at the times of the Pharaohs already and it was a famous weapon. Back in those days the head of the weapon was made of stone. Later, metal heads were socketed to the top of the handle, and whilst being a simple ball at first, in the proceeding of the centuries flanges and other protrusions were added. European maces in the early Middle Ages had spiked heads or symetrical blunt heads.
In the times of the Old Orient already the mace became a representative weapon, like the scepter. Later this representative function was introduced in Europe as well, and the marshal’s baton finally is a shape of the old mace that made it to modern military times.
